Statement of Need/Program Overview
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting autosomal recessive disease affecting more than 70,000 people worldwide and 30,000 in the United States and is more common among white individuals of Northern European ancestry. Earlier diagnosis, treatment of exacerbations, and use of long-term therapies have all increased the lifespan of patients with CF. The median survival age of patients with CF has increased from 5 years in 1955 to 41.1 years in 2012. As life expectancy for patients with CF continues to increase with newer and more effective therapies, there has been an increasing number of reported CF-related complications. Clinicians need more education on how to manage CF-related issues, some chronic and some acute, on an ongoing basis.
