Hyponatremia Treatment Options: Management of High-Risk Patients

Mitchell Rosner, MD, FACP is the Henry B. Mulholland Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Chairman for the Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, and completed his residency and a fellowship at the University of Virginia. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.

 

Dr. Rosner is the fellowship program director for the Division of Nephrology and the associate program director for the medicine residency program at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He is also the developer and director of the in-training examination for nephrology fellows.

 

Dr. Rosner has a strong interest in education. He is a member of the training program directors executive committee and the geriatric nephrology advisory board of the American Society of Nephrology, and serves on a number of national committees devoted to educational aspects of medical training. Dr. Rosner is the recipient of numerous honors including the University of Virginia All-University Teaching Award and the University Master Educator Award. 

 

His clinical practice focus is the medical care of patients with all forms of kidney disease—from acute kidney failure to end-stage kidney disease. His special interest in patients with polycystic kidney disease led Dr. Rosner to found the first regional clinic to specifically address the clinical management of patients with polycystic kidney disease. Dr. Rosner serves as the medical director for this multidisciplinary, patient-centered clinic that also provides selected patients the opportunity to enroll in clinical trials investigating novel therapies for this disease.

 

His research interests include the pathogenesis and management of disorders of sodium and water balance, the treatment of polycystic kidney disease, and the development of novel therapeutics for acute kidney injury. 

 

Michael J. Cawley, BS, PharmD, RRT, CPFT  is Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences, Philadelphia, PA (USA). Dr. Cawley graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science receiving both his Bachelor and Doctor of Pharmacy degree's respectively. He completed a post-doctorate residency in Surgical Critical Care Pharmacy Practice at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in conjunction with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Cawley has greater than 25 years of experience in critical care including practicing as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and Critical Care Clinical Pharmacist. Areas of expertise include mechanical ventilation, critical care simulation training, aerosol therapy, sedation and analgesia, fluids and electrolytes, acid base disorders and infections in the critically ill patient.

Dr. Cawley is recognized for his leadership within the pharmacy profession including a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). He is a well published author, medical and legal consultant, pharmaceutical advisory board member and editorial reviewer for a number of medical journals including Pharmacotherapy, Clinical Therapeutics, Critical Care Medicine and editorial board member of Annals of Pharmacotherapy (Critical Care Section) Case Reports in Critical Care and Journal of Drug Intoxication and Detoxification. In addition, he is recognized as an outstanding educator and speaker receiving greater than 180 invitations as a presenter for national/international conferences and professional meetings.
