Richard J. Martin, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado, and holds the Edelstein Chair in Pulmonary Medicine. He is Professor of Medicine at National Jewish Health and at the University of Colorado. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and completed his residency in medicine at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his pulmonary fellowship at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. He is board certified in both internal medicine and pulmonary diseases.
 
Dr. Martin's current areas of research include the distal airways in asthma, the effect of mycoplasma on chronic asthma, and the mechanisms related to increased bronchial responsiveness in nocturnal asthma. Additional areas of research are for the Asthma Clinical Research Network and how infection and cigarette smoke propagate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He has authored over 250 journal articles as well as many books and book chapters on various topics related to respiratory disorders. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals and is a reviewer for many journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Chest, and The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
 
Dr. Martin is currently Chair of the Infections and Asthma Task Force of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). He is a member of many professional associations including the AAAAI, American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), and the American Thoracic Society, among others.
 
Dr. Martin was inducted into the Colorado Pulmonary Hall of Fame in 2007. He received the ACCP Distinguished Scholar Award in Respiratory Health (2003-2007), and has been recognized in various publications including America's Top Doctors and Who's Who in America.
1. Describe clinical characteristics of patients who may be at risk for asthma exacerbations
2. Implement guideline-based strategies in clinical decision making for the treatment of patients with asthma
3. Develop treatment plans that target underlying inflammation throughout the respiratory tract
4. Utilize patient education and routine monitoring to ensure prescribed treatment is effective
